Decatur Pop Up Chalk Fest

Pop Up Chalk Fest is a series of chalk art festivals put on by the GA Chalk Artists Guild. The nature of Pop Up is about the fleeting moment. When you shut down a street for a few hours or have a quick one time event, chalk on the ground can happen as a creative flow.

Pop Up Chalk Fest is a series of chalk art festivals put on by the GA Chalk Artists Guild. The nature of Pop Up is about the fleeting moment. When you shut down a street for a few hours or have a quick one time event, chalk on the ground can happen as a creative flow. Artists are able to express themselves in one moment and then leave it behind. The focus is not the finished piece but is in the creation of art and community.

June 9, 2019

Our next Pop Up will be hosted on June 9th in partnership with the Decatur Arts Alliance. We will have a featured artist area, chalk competition, and a community chalk walk. Anyone can participate in the competition. It is free and monetary prizes are awarded for various categories.

Featured Artists

We will host 4 artists to be featured at this event. A stipend will be provided as well as lunch. The chosen artists will create a 7x7ft drawing over the course of the day. They will start by 10am and must be finished by 7pm. The artists are expected to work during the full event hours to create a quality detailed piece. The theme is to be decided. The Decatur Arts Alliance will select the featured artists this year.

To qualify to be a featured artist you must:

  • Share your portfolio or photos of previous work
  • Have chalked at Pop Up in the past
  • Be a featured GACAG member

Chalk Competition

The chalk competition is held during the Atlanta Streets Alive hours, 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Each chalk square will be 5x5ft. We encourage everyone to sign up to chalk – it is completely free. A cash prize will be awarded as well as some fun chalk swag. Each artist must follow the guidelines to be eligible to win. If you have chalked at pop up before, this is similar to our usual set up. You get an open street to come and practice your skills for the day. If you do not want to chalk the full day as a featured artist and prefer a smaller size then this is a good option for you.

  • Use only chalk, chalk pastel or tempera paint.
  • Only draw on your assigned square. Not in other areas of the parking lot or trees or benches. Be smart.
  • Have Fun!

Community Chalk Walk

Everyone is encouraged to join us to chalk in our community area. We are providing chalk, blending tools and will show you how to use them. This is a great learning opportunity for newbies to learn from chalk masters!
